Bruno Coulais
“In film, a composer must reach out to filmmakers, enter their world, but without giving up their own. That is the challenge—or the paradox—of music for the screen. By collaborating with directors from a wide variety of backgrounds, I feel I’ve discovered a great deal about myself in the process. It has helped me grow, to explore territories that were not naturally my own. Cinema is a laboratory where I have sought to create original orchestral arrangements combining Corsican polyphonies with musicians from jazz, pop, classical music, and even rappers. Just like today’s world, a fragmented world where all cultures intermingle.”
So spoke Bruno Coulais, one of the most innovative composers in contemporarycinema, during the tribute paid to him in 2011 at the Cinémathèque de Paris.
In 1978, Bruno Coulais, a young composer of concert works, discovered in film music a new means of expression, a way to bring the sophistication of hiswriting to a wider audience. François Reichenbach, followed by Josée Dayan, Jacques Davila, Souleymane Cissé, and Laurent Heynemann—first in television and then in film—guided him in discovering this new world.
In 1995, he composed the music for Microcosmos. This initiatory journey on a centimeter-scale offered him the opportunity to reveal the full scope of his compositional style. He infused his score with a strange lyricism, somewhere between wonder and fantasy, confirming the lesson he had learned from François Reichenbach: “To every documentary image, music brings an element of fiction.”The success of Microcosmos established the musician and made him the indispensable composer for other natural tales alongside Jacques Perrin, director (Winged Migration, Oceans, Seasons…) and producer (Himalaya, The Childhood of a Leader…).
In addition to arthouse films and a few major popular hits such as Les Choristes, it is hardly surprising that this insatiable curiosity found a particularly inspiring outlet in animated cinema, notably through his collaboration with two exceptional creators, Henry Selick and Tomm Moore.
The former, the American director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, produced byTim Burton, invited Bruno Coulais to compose the score for Coraline, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2009. Ten years later, they reunited for Wendell& Wild, streaming on Netflix.
For Irish director Tomm Moore, BrunoCoulais composed the music for his Irish trilogy: The Secret of Kells (2009),Song of the Sea (2014), and Wolf walkers (2020)—three films that were also nominated for Oscars.
In 2026, Bruno Coulais composed the original score forSelma Sunniva’s film GirlBeast and for Augusto Zanovello’s Le Faune, while continuing his fruitful collaboration with Anne Fontaine and Patrice Leconte.
Whatever the project, Bruno Coulais maintains the same high standards and always views his art as a window onto the world. A true modern alchemist, he has a very personal way of blending the most diverse cultures into a universal harmony.
