Éric Neveux discovered his calling for music at the age of 25, when it first intersected with cinema. Fascinated by Bristol’s Downtempo scene, Éric Neveux had just released, under the name Mr Neveux, the album TUBA on the Cup of Tea Records label.
François Ozon, freshly graduated from La Fémis, asked him to compose the score for his first medium-length film, Regarde la mer, followed by his debut feature, Sitcom. From that moment on, Éric Neveux was determined to bring music and cinema together and carry them into the future. His encounter with Patrice Chéreau on Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train, selected in Competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, proved to be a defining and formative moment. Working alongside a director as demanding as he was creative, Éric Neveux deepened his cinematic approach to composition, exploring the relationship between music, meaning, and storytelling. He went on to compose the score for Intimacy, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival, and Persecution, which received an award at the 2009 Venice Film Festival. He also followed his mentor into the theatre, where they collaborated on a series of remarkable productions.
With more than 70 feature films to his credit, Éric Neveux has naturally established himself as a trusted creative partner for directors whose work is distinctive, ambitious, and demanding, including Rachid Bouchareb for his “American Trilogy,” Isabelle Czajka (Domestic Life), Emmanuelle Bercot (Standing Tall, which opened the 2015 Cannes Film Festival), and Ziad Doueiri (The Attack, followed by The Insult, nominated for an Academy Award in 2018).
In 2020, he composed the score for Emmanuelle Bercot’s acclaimed film Peaceful, selected in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and featuring Benoît Magimel, who won the César Award for Best Actor. His musical style has also found its place in more mainstream productions, including Poly by Nicolas Vanier and The New Adventures of Little Nicholas by Laurent Tirard, as well as ambitious documentary projects for cinema, such as Once Upon a Forestby Luc Jacquet, and television, including Inside Obama’s White House for the BBC.
His work also extends to television films, among them A Broken Man by Philippe Triboit, awarded at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival in 2019, and L’Enfant de Personne by Akim Isker, which received the Best TV Film Award at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival in 2021.
Animation has provided Éric Neveux with a particularly rich playground, allowing him to explore his craft with virtuosity through films such as Richard the Stork by Toby Genkel and Reza Memary, Zombillénium by Arthur de Pins and Alexis Ducord (official selection at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival), SamSam by Tanguy de Kermel (2020), and the second instalment of the Richard the Stork adventures (2023), directed by Mette Rank-Tange.
On the series front, his credits include seasons 2 and 3 of Borgia, created by Tom Fontana for Canal+, all seven seasons of A French Village, and, more recently, two collaborations with his long-time creative partner Ziad Doueiri: the original score for The Collapse (Dérapages) for Arte and Netflix, followed by Black Hearts, first released on Prime Video and later broadcast on France 2 in 2024.
Éric Neveux said composition is ultimately a constant search for meaning and a search for sound. His work as a composer and producer is both passionate and exacting, drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical traditions that he freely reshapes and subverts. At its heart lies a distinctive, deeply personal musical language, always placed entirely at the service of the image.
