Maxence Dussère

Since graduating from La Fémis in 2015, Maxence Dussère has established himself as a composer of singular talent, exploring a sonic palette where every note is in dialogue with the image. His career began with Hotaru, a science fiction short film by William Laboury, for which he composed a haunting electro soundtrack that is both full-bodied and hypnotic.

This acclaimed debut, which won an award at the Festival Premier Plans in Angers, marked the beginning of a rich and eclectic career. His talent for translating emotions into music is confirmed with Joueurs directed by Marie Monge, composed with Nicolas Becker and Vladimir Kudryavtsev. Eschewing synthesizers in favour of a sparse instrumental ensemble - double bass, violin, percussion - he captures the intensity of the play and the magnetic relationship between the characters, creating a musical tension of great finesse. Until 2020, Maxence divides his time between sound editing for cinema and composing for the screen. This multifaceted approach led him to work on Léos Carax's Annette, an extraordinary musical on which he acted as music editor. His technical and artistic vision won him a César for Best Sound in 2022, confirming his hybrid expertise. Following this recognition, Maxence decided to devote himself exclusively to composing, confirming his primary vocation. He has worked on more than a dozen films and series, including the acclaimed De Grâce, directed by Vincent Maël Cardona (César for Best First Film for Les magnétiques in 2022) for Arte. His score finely embodies the soul of Le Havre and its docks, blending haunting strings and lively choruses to underscore the characters' tragic fates. His other credits include the original scores for Rochdy Zem's Les Miens (Mostra de Venise 2022), Héloïse Pelloquet's La Passagère and Houria directed by Mounia Meddour (co-composed with Yasmine Meddour).

The beginning of 2025 was a very busy time. His impressive work on Jacques Audiard's musical Emilia Pérez, for which he also composed and produced, was rewarded with an Oscar nomination in the Best Sound category. Lawrence Valin's feature film Little Jaffna, presented at the Venice Mostra Film Festival in 2024, will be released on April 30th, and Ceci est mon corps, a documentary by the talented Jérôme Clément-Wilz, will soon be broadcast on Arte. Finally, he has just completed the original score for Love Me Tender, Anna Cazenave-Cambet's second feature film, loosely based on the phenomenal novel written by Constance Debré, here starred by Vicky Krieps. The film will have its world premiere in the Official Selection of the Cannes Festival 2025, in the Un Certain Regard category.
